Some thermodynamical aspects of protein hydration water.

چکیده
We study by means of nuclear magnetic resonance the self-diffusion of protein hydration water at different hydration levels across a large temperature range that includes the deeply supercooled regime. Starting with a single hydration shell (h = 0.3), we consider different hydrations up to h = 0.65. Our experimental evidence indicates that two phenomena play a significant role in the dynamics of protein hydration water: (i) the measured fragile-to-strong dynamic crossover temperature is unaffected by the hydration level and (ii) the first hydration shell remains liquid at all hydrations, even at the lowest temperature.

Thermodynamical and Experimental Study of the Effects of Ball Clay-Silica Fume Combination on the Hydration and Strength
The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as the most expensive constituent of concrete is associated with destructive environmental effects and significant energy consumption. Thus, the use of supplementary cementitious materials such as Natural or synthetic pozzolans is a fundamental solution that affects the kinetics of hydration of cementitious materials. In this article, to evaluate...
متن کاملProtein hydration dynamics in solution: a critical survey.
The properties of water in biological systems have been studied for well over a century by a wide range of physical techniques, but progress has been slow and erratic. Protein hydration--the perturbation of water structure and dynamics by the protein surface--has been a particularly rich source of controversy and confusion. Our aim here is to critically examine central concepts in the descripti...
متن کاملWater Sorption on Martian Regolith Analogs: Near-infrared Reflectance
Introduction: Due to large variations of both surface temperature and amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, relative humidity at the Martian surface is subject to variations of several orders of magnitude. As a result, minerals of the regolith that are in direct contact with the atmosphere are susceptible to adsorb and desorb water over diurnal and seasonal cycles [1,2,3]. Near-infrared refl...
متن کاملMolecular mechanism of the hydration of Candida antarctica lipase B in the gas phase: Water adsorption isotherms and molecular dynamics simulations.
Hydration is a major determinant of activity and selectivity of enzymes in organic solvents or in gas phase. The molecular mechanism of the hydration of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) and its dependence on the thermodynamic activity of water (a(w)) was studied by molecular dynamics simulations and compared to experimentally determined water sorption isotherms. Hydration occurred in two phas...
متن کاملPerspective: Structure and ultrafast dynamics of biomolecular hydration shells
The structure and function of biomolecules can be strongly influenced by their hydration shells. A key challenge is thus to determine the extent to which these shells differ from bulk water, since the structural fluctuations and molecular excitations of hydrating water molecules within these shells can cover a broad range in both space and time. Recent progress in theory, molecular dynamics sim...
